When Smith spoke so famously of ‘the mean rapacity, the monopolizing spirit of merchants and manufacturers’ he could perfectly well have been talking about the spirit of the merchants he knew best, the merchants whose business practises he had watched most carefully, the tobacco lords of Glasgow.6
